Default Index Files Explained (index.php vs index.html)

Overview

Your website loads the default index file when someone visits your domain.

Common index files (in order of priority)

1. index.php

2. index.html

3. index.htm

If more than one exists, the server loads the highest-priority file.

How to check which index file is used

1. Go to Eclipse Web Portal

2. Open File Manager

3. Navigate to public_html

4. Look for existing index files

Troubleshooting

• Website shows wrong content → remove unused index files

• Blank page → index file may be missing or broken
